| Elevate your Elevator Pitch: The Power of Positioning and Differentiation |
|
Speaker: Allison Van Diest
There is likely no other organization that provides the specific service you provide, but is that apparent to someone learning about you for the first time? Telling a compelling and unique story is the best way you can motivate new support — especially during times like these when every organization is in critical need of funding. When you leave this positioning workshop, you’ll have a fresh and exciting “elevator pitch” in hand that can be used to fuel communications from annual appeals to case statements.

| There Ought to Be a Law: Best Fundraising Practices We Probably Don’t Practice |
|
Speaker: Lawrence Henze
Over the years, nonprofits have adopted practices that have “weathered the test of time,” but are they really the best practices — or are we sticking with the precedents because we fear change? If we could start from scratch, what would we introduce as best practices? This session will propose best practice solutions, from direct mail and donor relations to prospect development and goal setting. Learn how to break away from practices that are less than the best and seek new levels of success for your organization. At the end, you’ll know:
• How to create a new fundraising dynamic with prospect research and management as a critical component • How to develop a comprehensive prospect management plan inclusive of all development activities • How to create a skill set that enables you to be a central participant in the new fundraising dynamic

| Email Marketing: Building and Executing Campaigns that Drive Results |
|
Speaker: Allison Van Diest
This session, which builds on recommendations shared in last year’s popular “Making the Most of Email Marketing” presentation, goes deeper into how to craft a sequence of email messages that will motivate support. Audience members will be asked to share examples of emails in use today and, through a mini-workshop, will understand how segmentation, powerful content, and personalization can strengthen individual messages and multi-tiered campaigns.

| What Social Networks Should Be Doing for You |
|
Speaker: Steve MacLaughlin
Social networking is a hot topic these days — but is it a passing fad, a potential for lots of work with little payoff, or the most important thing for you to focus on in 2009? We’ll discuss why the answer depends on your organization, your vision, and your expectations, plus give you a solid plan for making the most of the social networking phenomenon.

| The Changing Nature of Online Fundraising |
|
Speaker: Steve MacLaughlin
There are three major trends impacting nonprofits today: The channels used to fundraise are changing, the people who donate are changing, and the giving experience is changing. We’ll discuss why integrated and multi-channel fundraising, engaging Generation X and Millennial donors, and moving beyond the donation page are critical.

| Strengthening Your Loyal Donor Base Through Personal Conversations |
|
Speaker: Katherine Swank, J.D., Consultant, Target Analytics
Major and planned gift programs have often been thought of as the private purview of credentialed development, legal, and financial professionals. With terms like “present value methodology” and “four-tier system of taxation,” it’s no wonder many of us feel this way. This session will focus on the real reasons donors make gifts of impact — their desire to make a difference in the world they live in, both now and in the future — and how you can gain confidence in discussing major and planned gift opportunities with them. We will:
• Review the reasons donors consider making major and legacy gifts • Provide suggestions on making the initial phone call and personal meeting invitation • Discuss listening skills that prepare you to engage in conversations about major and planned gift opportunities and soliciting the gift commitments

| Starting a Planned Giving Program |
|
Speaker: Katherine Swank J.D., Consultant, Target™ Analytics, a Blackbaud Company
Evaluating and choosing which planned gift vehicles are best for your organization takes time but is well worth the effort. Most organizations can use existing resources to begin a basic legacy program and continue by incorporating additional gift opportunities over time. Successful planned giving programs take time to build but usually see a financial return on their efforts in as little as three to five years. We’ll use real-world examples to:
• Present the benefits of starting a planned gift program • Review the most common deferred gift vehicles that charities promote • Offer target marketing strategies for your various constituencies • Provide an assessment tool to determine your organization’s readiness

| Building an Action Plan to Out-Hustle the Economy |
|
Speaker: Samantha Cohen
Sure, times are tough. With spending cuts and worries about the future, it's natural to want to bury your head in the sand. Many organizations will choose to cut back their development activities — an understandable response, but one that won't position you or your organization for success. Every organization, large and small, needs to create an action plan. This session will cover key topics such as evaluating new income sources; promoting constituent loyalty through recognition programs for donors, volunteers, and advocates; crafting a strong and transparent communications strategy; and improving the ask. Join us for real strategies you can institute now to ensure you not only survive, but thrive.

| PCI – The Credit Card Changes that Will Impact You! |
|
Speaker: Bucky Wall and Mark Banbury
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of requirements developed by the major credit card companies to enhance credit and debit card data security. All organizations that process, store, or transmit payment card data must follow the PCI DSS requirements or will eventually risk losing their ability to process credit card payments. Join Bucky Wall, Director of Corporate Readiness at Blackbaud, as he explains how these requirements impact non-profit organizations. Following that, Mark Banbury, Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Plan Canada, will discuss his organization’s approach to compliance and the importance of these measures to the security of both NPOs and their constituents. |
